Cheap, simple potassium meter released*

*not really

But how good would it be?

Since my freaky high potassium at Christmas, I’ve been really paranoid about killing myself by having a high potassium level. I’ve become so damned careful what I eat, and so hyper-aware of any symptoms of high potassium that I’m just about driving myself crazy.

Wouldn’t it be great if we, as dialysis patients, could have something like diabetes sufferers have? A quick prick on the finger, a drop of blood on a stick, and a quick potassium reading. No more trying to decide if you’re imagining the pins and needles. No more stressing that our heart feels “a bit funny”. No more trips to the hospital for a blood test to find that your K+ is really OK.

Anybody out there with a background in bio-chemistry want to develop this? With over 300,000 people on dialysis in the USA alone, surely there’s a market for a reasonably priced product such as this?
